Now Rebus is in prison for an attempted murder, and what a surprise, there is the brutal murder of an inmate in a locked cell. And also, a missing persons case is investigated by police colleagues which reveals secrets and rivalries. Simply put, this is a delicious crime thriller by a master writer.

The Rebus stories just get better and better. Now long retired and suffering with COPD, Rebus is assisting/hindering the police investigation of a bent cop. The story over only 8 days is rife with corruption and hidden motives. Rebus has a life-long legacy of breaking rules and crossing lines, so this book begins and ends with his trial for a specific misdeed. Highly recommended.
In A House Of Lies – Ian Rankin
After more than 20 Inspector Rebus books, the stories are as good as ever. This most recent book has a Rankin characteristic, a complex plot with two cold cases. A dazzling feature of the Rebus stories is that lies, deceit and corruption are pretty evenly divided between the police and the criminals. These Rebus stories are also becoming more philosophical as he ages and deals with the medical and moral consequences of a mis-spent life. Very entertaining.
Saints of the Shadow Bible by Ian Rankin
Vintage Rebus: two stories, a 30 year-old cold case and a contemporary crime. Rebus actually works with Malcom Fox from The Complaints which is a trying experience for all. The Scottish atmosphere (pubs, etc) is perfect.
